I just started reading up on using social networks to drive traffic to yiur web site or sites. I've joined several and let a few go. Since reading and studing the web 2.0 business model I know now that I need to register and maintain my accounts on as many social networks as I can.

I'm particularly fond of several Ning communities, including this one, because of all the RSS syndication they do for us. I syndicate our Forum and Latest Activity feeds on a lens at Squidoo, through MyBlogLog.com, and on my Facebook profile.
I try to cross-syndicate the RSS feeds on multiple sites and lenses to make it easier for people to find what we have written.
I do the same with my main forum at http://AYearFromNowForum.com and other sites I manage.
I bookmark pages I like on del.icio.us and rank good pages on StumbleUpon.com.
I'm a member of dozens of other sites, but these are the ones where I do the majority of my social networking.
I just started a Social Networking Sites for Business community on Ryze.com, but it won't grow as quickly because they don't offer RSS feeds that I can use to get more exposure.
Oh, I almost forgot Twitter. I'm starting to use it more now. I get lots of good notices from a variety of friends and colleagues by following them on Twitter.com and I have found that it's a great way to find things I never would have seen otherwise.
Off the top of my head, those are the ones I put my effort into.
I don't think you will do really well by trying to advertise your products and services on the social networking sites, but I know they are a great way to meet new people, get to know them better, and offer links to products and services on profile pages and blog posts. I think it's all about relationship building. It takes longer, but I've found that it works better than just posting ads everywhere - which is what I did at first before I knew better.
I forgot to say that I don't think you have to maintain as many social networks as you can, but it's good to try them and find the ones that work best for you.
Once you've done that, it's important to be a regular participant on the sites you like the best and/or which produce the best results for you.
I think it's better to participate regularly on a handful of sites than to just have a presence on dozens.
