Hi Joan,

 

Basically, this s just a URL shortening service, similar to tinyurl.com, bit.ly, and all the others. It is not owned by nor affiliated with Google.

 

It may work to give an easier URL to a Google+ profile, but is not the best way.

 

I think I'd prefer to use bit.ly to do the same thing, but it's something each of us can decide for ourselves. Bit.ly has a track record and this new service does not.

 

At some point, Google will have to address this issue and provide their own form of vanity URLs. I'll wait for that before putting much effort into promoting my Google+ profile.

I would not put a lot of effort into marketing using this new service. If it disappears, people will lose a lot of links and effort. (Not that it necessarily will disappear.)

As usual, your mileage may vary, objects in mirror ain't where they look like they are, close cover before striking, this coffee is HOT! (grin) 

What does everyone else think? Good idea? Am I being an old fuddy-duddy?

Google has tried to do the social media thing before and failed so I think they are a little more open to what their users have to say this go around. [I hope they do] I am not using them solely right now - will take the time to learn it first - but once it's out of Beta we shall see - hard to think they could ever replace FB though.

I started using G+ for my Zazzle sharing and I really like how photos are displayed there. I got added to some great photography circles there. I spend too much time gawking at photos :)   I have yet to see if it helps anyone with real numbers for marketing.
